OUR STORY
Situated on the secluded white sands of Aili Beach, Konda Maloba stretches over twelve hectares (28 acres) amidst untouched hills still covered in jungle, gardens gigantic trees. From the outset, the landscape and flora dictated every decision as we followed the natural contours of the land.
Bruce W. Carpenter is an Indonesian art scholar, collector, and author whose life's work has been devoted to documenting and preserving the country's cultural heritage.
Art historian and author and co-author of more than twenty publications on Indonesian art and culture, Bruce W. Carpenter has spent decades documenting the traditions, craftsmanship, and histories that shape the archipelago, a passion he passed on to his children Avalon and Allegra. His work has always been driven by a belief that cultural heritage is something to be understood, preserved, and passed on.
Among the many places that left a lasting impression, Sumba stood apart. Its living traditions, megalithic heritage, and remarkable craftsmanship revealed a culture that had remained deeply rooted in its ancestral identity. Over many years of returning to the island, Bruce built lasting friendships with local communities, artists, traditional leaders, and Marapu elders, allowing him to experience Sumba not as a visitor, but through the people who call it home.
Konda Maloba Resort grew from that enduring relationship. What began as the search for a quiet coastal refuge gradually transformed into a far greater ambition: to create a place that reflects the spirit of Sumba while contributing meaningfully to its future. Together with his family and a team of artisans, Bruce helped shape a resort where architecture, craftsmanship, and hospitality are guided by respect for the landscape and its culture. Every decision was made with the intention of preserving what makes this place extraordinary, allowing guests to experience Sumba through authenticity rather than spectacle.
With the exception of Mandala, the stonework multipurpose complex housing our lounges, restaurant, kitchen, bar and swimming pools, in homage to the local architecture, each of our wooden villas is elevated on columns, allowing the air to circulate above and below. Their often soaring roofs are thatched with elephant grass that cools and insulates against the heat.
The architecture intends to enrapture through subtle details, astonishing finishings and creative flourishes. All of them have huge windows. Instead of dominating the site, they unite with the bushes and trees. They are expressions of the ideal that architecture should be shaped by the pulse and soul of the land and local culture.
